One of the Maldives Best Kept Secrets … Surfing at Niyama Private Islands
Surfing in the Maldives is world class – warm turquoise waters lap up against paradise islands, with swells sent up from Southern Ocean storms, producing some of the most beautifully formed rides on the planet. There are however few resorts where you can take to the waves directly from your beach, we explore this unique combination offered at Niyama Private Islands.
The Maldives is high on the bucket list of anyone who has paddled into a wave, but on most of the Islands the main issue for surfers is that you can’t take to the waves from resort. Niyama, however, is one of the very few luxury Maldives resorts where you can do just this. Here, the surf actually breaks right on its own shore – at Vodi surf point, and with a perfect left-hand point break peeling down the west side of the lower island, you can jump in from the beach and enjoy a couple of waves at your leisure.
A Surfing Experience for Everyone
Beginners and experienced riders can enjoy the surf in the Maldives’ best-kept secret. The waves here are relatively mellow and playful, but challenging at times and suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers with some spots perfect for beginner coaching. For the more experienced board riders just five minutes away by speedboat is Kasabu surf point – a superb hollow right-hander, and heading east from the island for ten minutes is Hocus Pocus for another barrelling right-hander
With a highly experienced surf school, and a selection of other breaks close by (accessible by boat), Niyama has to be at the top of list for waveriders, experts and beginners alike.
So if surfing in paradise is on your ‘must do’ list – look no further than Niyama to tick that box and many more…
